Every winter, thousands of visitors safely drive through Northern Norway and have an unforgettable road trip. Many come from countries with long winters and are already comfortable driving on snow and ice.

Others have little or no experience with winter roads. For them, Arctic driving can be far more challenging than expected.

Over the years, we have unfortunately witnessed many accidents on the roads around Tromsø. Most are not caused by reckless driving, but by drivers who underestimate how different Arctic winter conditions can be.

What Makes Arctic Driving Different?

Winter roads in Northern Norway are unlike those in many other parts of Europe.

Weather can change quickly. A road that is dry in the afternoon may become icy after sunset. Snowfall, strong winds, drifting snow, freezing rain, and changing temperatures all affect driving conditions.

During the polar night, daylight is limited, and wildlife such as reindeer or moose may suddenly appear on the road.

Good preparation makes all the difference.

Tips for Safe Winter Driving in Tromsø and Northern Norway

If you plan to rent a car, we recommend the following:

• Drive according to the conditions—not the speed limit. Ice and packed snow require much longer stopping distances.
• Increase your following distance. Leave far more space than you normally would.
• Brake and accelerate gently. Sudden movements can cause the vehicle to lose traction.
• Reduce your speed before entering corners. Avoid braking heavily while turning.
• Always use winter tyres. Rental cars in Norway are equipped with approved winter tyres during the winter season.
• Expect changing road conditions. Ice can appear unexpectedly, especially on bridges, shaded sections, and after temperatures drop.
• Keep your headlights on at all times. Visibility changes quickly during Arctic winter.
• Watch carefully for wildlife. Reindeer and moose are common in many areas and may appear without warning.
• Allow extra travel time. Rushing is one of the biggest contributors to winter accidents.
• Check the weather forecast before setting out. Conditions can change rapidly, particularly on mountain roads.
• If you don't feel comfortable, don't drive. There is no shame in choosing organised transport instead.

Experience Matters More Than Confidence

Many people assume that driving an SUV or four-wheel-drive vehicle makes winter driving easy.

It doesn't.

Four-wheel drive can help you get moving, but it does not help you stop on ice. Safe winter driving depends far more on experience, anticipation, smooth vehicle control, and understanding the conditions than on the type of vehicle you drive.
